about

The story starts with Jake and Joe. Best mates since tadpoles. Best mates through school and still not at each other's throats (although most of the teachers at school were at theirs most of the time). They discovered quality music at a young age thanks to both of their dad's introducing them to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Through a mutual friend, they met Tony at secondary school who had an uncontrollable love for crisps. It didn't take long for them to discover that Tony was into the same bands as they were and that he was a rather talented budding musician. Influenced by Flea of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tony had taught himself to play bass at the age of 14 and he 'slapped da bass' in his bedroom daily like a funky mother****er before deciding to switch to playing guitar a few years later.

Tony influenced Jake to learn to play guitar and showed him the basic chord shapes to get him started and around a year later, Joe started playing bass. It wasn't long before the 3 of them arranged to have their first jamming session and successfully murdered a few Arctic Monkeys and Milburn numbers in Jake's garage, using low powered amplifiers, no vocals and no drummer.

After a few months of jamming in Jake's garage together and doing everyone's head in on the estate, they upgraded to practising at 'Practise Sheffield' and it was then that they discovered that they had better find someone who can come along and sing since they knew there were microphones available to use. Jake perked up immediately and said 'shut up, I'll sing' and that's exactly what he did.

From here, the lads were still left with a problem which was hindering them from forming a band. They needed a drummer. For months, they searched like mad to find a drummer, advertising online and walking around Sheffield, sticking posters up in music shops and rehearsal studios and doing all they possibly could to find a drummer, but nothing ever came of it. They eventually gave up trying, however, their man appeared when they least expected it. Jake, Joe and Tony were attending a Catfish and The Bottlemen gig down at the Frog and Parrot in Sheffield and it was there where they met Rob, who was in another band at the time but they decided instantly that they were going to nick him for themselves and that's exactly what they did.

They rehearsed together for the first time in spring 2012 at Practise Sheffield and after a few months of practising together at Practise Sheffield and Yellow Arch Studios, they decided to rent their own rehearsal space at Stag Works in Sheffield. Rob was the missing piece to the jigsaw puzzle, not only because he was their destined drummer but because he was the last pea in the pod. When Rob came along, he added a great surge of energy to the band, both as a friend and as a musician.

With all positions in the band filled, they began to write their own songs and it wasn't long until they became 'Sabella'. Despite Joe breaking his collarbone during the summer and needing an operation to mend it, Sabella booked their first ever gig which took place on 5th November 2012 at West Street Live after weeks of rehearsing furiously together. After gig number 1, they had no choice but to take a break due to Joe having an operation the following week, however, it wasn't long until they bounced back into action.

In January 2013, Sabella released their debut EP and threw themselves back in at the deep end for their second gig. They supported local band 'Blind Drivers' down at The Leadmill in Sheffield which gave them momentum to continue making their mark on the local music scene throughout 2013 despite being the newest band on the block.
